Hi, just converted from driving a Toyota MR2 to a 98 Vectra V6 SRi Estate after a kind woman decided to write the MR2 off for me!

Decided it was time to get something practical and fast and my mates dad happened to have the Vectra for sale......£1200 and she was mine! In good nick, done bout 95000 miles, SH, etc etc. Well happy and now got somewhere for the dog to go!

Only prob is it appears to have a flat spot at around 4000rpm and after, wondered if there was any common problems? Its not terrible but it just feels like its not pulling as well as it should?? Any ideas?

I'm a race engineer by trade so should be able to find out whats wrong but thought it was worth asking if there was anything common i should look for? Do these things occasionally kill spark plugs? As it almost feels as if it might be signing off on one pot?

Oh and heres a quick pic....

Cheers,

yeah flat spots are common
something to do is to put in a 3.8 or 4.0 ( 3.8 is best for yours though ) FPR fuel pressure regulator
these are found on the later 2.6v6 cars & will take out quite a bit of the flat spot
Few other tasty mods are putting in some 3.0 cams to boost her up a notch.
Pipercross viper cold air induction c/w 3 pipe mod, this makes the car feel a lot more punchy
There are much much more you can do ie bigger & gas flowed throttle body, knife edge inlet plenums,
Best thing to start though is either panel filter ( k & n or pipercross )although on a v6 get rid & put on a viper & youll still get the pull but also a nice noise & def the FPR ( only £18 from vaux )

Welcome mate johns about summed it all up for you flat spot is very common on the v6 model the 3.8 bar fpr will help along with a decent filter set up .
Anew set of plugs would not hurt her either . Stick to main dealer plugs as i have found these to be the best on a v6 and they are bosch anyway not ac delco .

Thanks for the advice, so the flat spot is down to lack of fuel then, probably an emissions thing. I'm going to plug in my mates diagnostics kit later just to make sure.

This has got a 2597cc engine in it by the way according to the log book if that makes any difference? When did they change to 3.8 bar FPR?

It did have an induction kit on it when i got it but i have put the std airbox back on with some uprated filter material we use at work and if anything it goes better with that than the induction kit.

To be honest i'm really trying to keep away from modding it engine wise as most of my past cars have ended up a bit mental as i have got carried away. Because i build racing engines for a living its too easy to do things and end up going a bit far. I had a Fiesta XR2 Mk2 that ended up so highly tuned it had to idle at 1500+rpm because the cam was so high lift and even then it idled badly and had to rev it right through the red to get it to its full potential, chirst did it go though, i made a lot of bigger cars look silly in that!

Saying that though wouldn't it be a shame if my cam belts on the V6 broke and i had to remove the heads.......hmmm excuse for porting work me thinks!

Welcome to the site bud, as you've already pointed out, theres many nice chaps on here to help get ya sorted:thumb:

As far as i'm aware the 2.6 wasn't fitted in vecs until september/october 2000??? (correct me if i'm wrong someone!)...

so not sure with that one dood:noidea:

If it's had a replacement engine which sounds likely, it would make sense to, but doesn't neccassarily mean that they used the later fpr:confused:

Like Redlines has just said....michaelgeorge is the man for vx partnumbers.

greetings and welcome to the V6 estateclub
standard fpr is 3.0 for the V6, change it for a 3.8 its a standard part on the 2.6 so only cost about £20, flay spot virtually cured...hth
