Vauxhall now make a revised cam sensor for the vectra b x20xev engine.
This revision has been out for some time now.
Vauxhall has done a field remedy as they call it to cure the ongoing problems with the sensor failing in this engine type.
Vauxhall now supply a new type connector with the sensor in a kit form to cure the problem.
What is required is to solder a new length of wiring cable into the loom which has the new style connector on the end of it.
The reason for the upgrade is that vauxhall say the original sensor wire becomes brittle over time and breaks up causing an earth fault to occur and electrical spike, this then causes the sensor to become faulty and sends the management light on.
Even with this up-grade there are still reports that the sensor is still failing on regular occurences.
After speaking to siemens who make these sensors as well as the crank sensor (yet again another cause for concern) it seems the connector is not the problem in itself it is the heat sink within the actual cam sensor.
Basiclly the heat sink is not up to the job of reflecting the heat away from the vital parts of the sensor and causes it to over heat and malfunction.
It is true that the wire for the connector can become brittle over time and this would be an ideal oppertunaty to repair the offending item but it will not be a complete cure
If you have the old style square connector they are still available but not from the vauxhall dealer as i have been told this is the recommended up-grade that vauxhall insist on doing.
The original parts are available from LMF and alike.
To put it into a nutshell if your wiring looks dodgy replace it with the new style connector and sensor if not replace it with the old style unit.
